Jordy Douglas was a fifth-round draft pick of the Toronto Maple Leafs, 81st overall in 1978, but he spurned the NHL opportunity to join the New England Whalers of the WHA. He had been a prolific scorer coming out of the Western junior hockey league where he had 60 goals and 56 assists for 116 points in 71 games in the 1977-78 season.

In his rookie season with the Whalers, Douglas played in 51 games and scored six goals and ten assists. He realized there was a big difference between scoring in the junior ranks and against other professionals. The club was absorbed by the NHL for the start of the 1979-80 season with the dissolution of the WHA and the team changed its name from the New England Whalers to the Hartford Whalers.

Determined to prove he was a legitimate goal scorer, he dedicated himself to improving his offensive production during his single season in the WHA, which he did, by scoring 33 times and collecting 57 points in 77 games.

In 1982-83 he signed with the Minnesota North Stars, scoring 13 goals and 27 points in 68 games. The following year was divided between the North Stars and the Winnipeg Jets. The bulk of his 1984-85 season was spent in the minors with the Sherbrooke Canadiens of the AHL. Douglas made just seven appearances with the Jets that year.

He finished his professional hockey career playing two years in Finland, which he says was a tremendous cultural experience. Having gone through the frigid winters in Minnesota and Winnipeg, the move to Finland was not all that difficult for Douglas.
